To get the proper fit for your furry family member's collar or harness, take the time to get the measurements you need before coming to Fenway Bark to purchase your new collar, harness and matching leash.
When measuring your dog for a collar, use a tape measure to get the measurement of the neck (B). It is important to measure the pet's neck instead of their collar. Don't make the mistake of just measuring a current collar that may or may not fit properly.
Measure all the way around the midpoint of the neck, halfway between the head and the base of the neck. For small breeds that you allow 1 finger to slide comfortably between the tape measure and the dog's neck. For dogs over 40 lbs., and especially large and giant breeds, allow for 2 fingers to slide easily between the tape measure and the dog's neck.
When measuring your dog for a harness, be sure to use a tape measure to get the measurement around the chest (C). This is often also referred to as the Girth (better to use this term with dog measurements than humans. Right ladies?). Measure all the way around the largest part of the chest, behind the front legs. If you find it difficult to capture this measurement with measuring tap, you may find it helpful to use a piece of string to take this measurement and tie it around the largest part of the chest then cut it off and measure from end to end. It is important for you to order the size that will fit around your dog's girth, but not be too lose which may be both unsafe and uncomfortable. While collars need to be a bit loose, the benefit of a harness is lost when it is too loose.
Both harnesses and collars are adjustable when you get them home. However, taking the time to measure and buy the right size will save you time and will make your pup both safe and comfortable sooner.
